Today is June 15

You've done it!  You have made it through this highly incredible and unlikely school year...what a trip it has been!

I am proud of each and every one of you.

This week, our weekly class will take on a different format:  attached to your weekly email is a description of the Time Capsule assignment that I give to my students each year.  Even though it's an odd year and I won't be able to put all of your capsules in a box until September, I think it's important to capture this moment in time, so that you can look back on it in 2023, when you GRADUATE!

In that assignment, there is a mini-assignment called the Memory Minute.  This is what you will be reading aloud to our class during our virtual lesson.  It's a way of saying goodbye and being thankful for the group dynamic we shared this year.  You will also be completing the Grad Bio - which you will email to me before our class, so that I can use it to "introduce" you before you read your Memory Minute.

All of the other parts of this assignment are your responsibility.  Keep them in a safe place over the summer and bring them to me in September and I will take care of them until graduation:)

Your assignments this week are the following:

English: Final Informal response:  Which book stood out for you this year and why?  All of the instructions are in the Power Point attached to your weekly email and there is also a link under "assignments" on our Teams Group.

Math: This week, I have assigned the MHS Final Exam Prep Video Lesson to you.  It is LONG - about 35 minutes, so watch it in chunks, not all at once!  There are course notes attached to it, which if you can, either print them out for future use or take your own notes in your math notebook - they're very useful!

Watch the lesson and then do the practice exam - NOT FOR MARKS!  Then later in the week (Wednesday probably!) I will send out a quiz on Forms of FIVE questions, based DIRECTLY on the questions you will see on the practice exam and I will collect your answers for marks.

That's it!  Do your work and I can't wait for our lesson this week - it's going to be good!

Today is June 8

Good morning and welcome to Week 4 of emergency distance learning!

As I've mentioned before, I am deeply impressed with your ability to adapt to learning in a new way with such (for the most part!) ease!

When we explored resilience in Term 2, I'll bet that many of you might have said that you don't possess the trait of resilience "adaptability" but now, there's no denying you do.

Two short weeks and then you're done...you can do this!

Math:  1.  Start with the Probability Power Point attached to to your weekly email and posted under "Math" on our Teams channel

                2.   Two lessons on Math Help Services (Tree Diagrams & Tree Diagrams & Complementary Events) - always watch the videos first!

                3.  Expect a quiz sent in Forms by email on Wednesday.

               4.  Check Flipgrid.com and enter flipcode "hardymath for a new prompt this week which will deal with probability.

English: 1.  Begin by completing the Form attached to your weekly email, which asks about your intention to complete the Random Autobiography                     Poem.   I NEED this information to be able to give you feedback, so PLEASE complete it.

                     2.  Your task this week is to complete the peer feedback and submit your final copy of the Random Autobiography poem by Saturday,                                June 13 at 12:00

                    3.  PLEASE  - if you haven't already - go to Flipgrid.com and enter the flipcode "hardykids" and create a short view where you tell us                                        about the most recent book you've read AND leave a reply on somebody else's video - EXPECT to be using Flipgrid in the next few                                    weeks and most definitely when we get back to school in the fall.

Today is June 1

Good morning everyone and welcome to Week 3 of Online Learning - two more weeks to go!

I am so in awe of how committed you are to your learning - these are seriously challenging times, so the fact that you are demonstrating resilience and learning new ways to learn is AMAZING!

You are definitely in charge of your learning these days!

Attached to your weekly email, you will find a PowerPoint for both English & Math, which are the starting points for your learning this week.  Please begin by reading through them and following the instructions.

Here are your assignments for the week, due Saturday at midnight:

English:  1.Write the rough draft of your Random Autobiography Poem (All files & instructions are in the PowerPoint)

     https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=3nWS1JGXAk-j7abDlIkkOzBvmBGCzpdFlsBItCBqh4NURFdKOUE5VzYySThURENMTkFBTks5MDAxTi4u

     2.  Under "assignments" on your Group's Team, you will see an assignment called "Playing with Flipgrid".  Flipgrid is an app where you create short videos of yourself and post them for others to comment.  Next week, you are going to be using it to give feedback to each other on your poems, so I would like you to start getting used to using it NOW.  Just follow the instructions, you don't need to download anything!

Math:  1.  Start by going through the Power Point attached to this week's email (it's also on your Team, under Files, then Math, then Surface Area of Geometric Solids - Working backwards)

2.  Complete the MHS assignments:

  • Surface Area of Composite Solids Involving Prisms and Cylinders
  • Extra Practice
  • Chapter Test 1
  • The last two are pdfs, so you can print them out if you want, or complete them in your notebook.  Please bring any questions you have to our lesson this week.

   3.  Keep your eye out for a QUIZ on Teams near the end of the week - to be completed in Forms - on working backwards with Geometric Solids.
Our lessons on Wednesday & Thursday will be both Math & English.
If you need any help, please don't hesitate to email me😀

Today is May 25

Good morning!

I hope you were able to enjoy the beautiful weather during the past few days - lord knows we deserve some sunshine in our lives!

This week's Teams meeting will be both English & Math, so please come prepared for both.

Last week, I was able to record parts of our math lessons and upload them to Stream, which is part of your Outlook account.  I have attached an instruction guide to your weekly email, explaining how you can access those videos if you missed the Teams meeting.

Here are your assignments for English & Math for this week:

English: Informal response to "How the author writes" - due Saturday at midnight.  The PowerPoint you need for this is under "Files" in our Group 24 Team.  There are also video instructions on my YouTube channel, Ms.Hardy.

Math:  Three lessons (watch the videos first!) from Math Help Services on Surface Area of Solids this week:

  • Surface Area of Prisms
  • Surface Area of Pyramids
  • Surface Area of Composite Solids

I will be recording and uploading an additional video on Stream regarding surface area of solids, so be sure to check Teams daily to see if the video has been posted.

I'm incredibly impressed with how committed you are to your learning - especially given the difficult circumstances you are living through.  You are truly demonstrating your resilience - I am so proud of you and am thankful for your commitment.  Teenagers ROCK!

Today is May 18

This week's assignment for English is the When This is Over Poem.  Because we had a "holiday" today, I thought that I would give you the benefit of handing in your poem by Saturday, May 23 at 12:00.

My suggestion is that you email me your drafts if you plan to submit the poem - it always leads to a higher quality piece of writing!

The original poem, model poem I wrote and rubric can all be found under Pages and Files, as well as attached to your weekly email that is found in your NFSB Outlook mail.

I look forward to reading your poems!

This week's lessons in Math are all on Math Help Services and are all focused on Perimeter & Area of Polygons:

  • ·         Perimeter of a Polygon
  • ·         Area of a regular polygon
  • ·         Word problems for regular polygons
  • ·         Extra practice
  • ·         Chapter Test 1

I have also created a video to reinforce your understanding of perimeter of a polygon here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PxKzuBYq20&t=25s

Here is a link for notes about perimeter of a polygon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SDdYTTG7Z0&feature=youtu.be

If you have difficulty with any of the questions, PLEASE email me and I will be more than happy to help!

PLEASE complete the question that I mailed to you last week - we will go over it in "class".

May the power of math be with you!

Today is May 14

English:  Please read one of  articles in the magazine that you received from me in the mail.  Email me to tell me what story you read.  For enrichment, you could write 3 Questions of Fact, 3 Questions of Interpretation and 1 Question Beyond the Text and email them to me also.

Math:  Please complete the word problem "Meal Out" that was included in the package I mailed you.  We will be correcting it in our weekly Teams meeting next Thursday.

Enjoy the holiday on Monday and don't forget to email me back with what you decide to do in terms of your learning by Saturday, May 16.

😊Miss Hardy

Today is May 4 - May the 4 be with you!

Even with the news that high schools will be closed for the remainder of the year, we need to stay connected, create a sense of community as best we can under the circumstances.

With that idea in mind, I have scheduled weekly Microsoft Teams meetings for both of our classes.  You have received an invite to these meetings on your NFSB email.  I can not stress how important it is to check your NFSB email - using any other email means that you will not be receiving vital updates that keep you up to date and I would hate to see anyone left out.

I sincerely look forward to "seeing" you in these meetings - I'm always telling you that teenagers NEED to talk and here is an opportunity to do just that!

Group 24's meeting is Wednesdays at 2:00 and Group 23's meeting is Thursdays at 2:00.

This week's learning package is available in these places:

  • attached to your weekly email from me
  • on the CVR website
  • under Pages & Files, as a pdf, with  the file name "Secondaire 2 - Week 5 pdf"
  • under Pages & Files, as a Word document titled "Weekly Learning Kit May 4"

Keep your minds engaged and your hearts inspired, little ones.  I think that knowing I may not see you until September has made me miss you even more!

Be well, & stay safe,

Miss Hardy:)

Today is April 27

It's so hard to believe that we are now entering Week 6 of social distancing. ..our world has definitely changed.  I think one of the things I look forward to most once life gets back to 'normal' is simply saying hello to you every day as you cross the threshold of the door to Room 220.  Meaningful daily rituals is what I miss the most - and that includes each one of you.

I have posted this week's Learning Kit (which I have adapted from the Ministry's) under Pages & Files titled "Weekly Learning Kit - Week 4" and the ministry Learning Package (including all of your subjects) is on the CVR homepage here: http://www.cvrhighschool.com/ministry-pedagogical-resources.html

I have also attached the Learning Kit to our weekly email that I sent this morning.

If you have any questions about the assignments or anything school related, please email me!

Peace,

Miss Hardy

Today is April 20

Many of you are continuing to  check your nfsb email and are doing work, even though I know creating a routine for learning during such a bizarre time is challenging.  I truly applaud you.  Learning is hard - and during stressful situations, even harder.  Remember that when I send out lessons to you, they are completely optional.

I have sent out an email with this week's learning package for you, as well as listed it under Pages & Files, titled "Weekly Learning Kit April 20".

If you are having difficulty logging in to either your nfsb email or math help services, please let me know and I can help you out.

DO email me and let me know that you've received my email and let me know how you're doing - I truly appreciate it!

Keep well,

Miss Hardy

Today is April 14

If you have checked your nfsb email  recently you'll know two things:

1.  There is a weekly learning package waiting for you!  Here's the link:

http://www.cvrhighschool.com/ministry-pedagogical-resources.html

2.  You have received login information for Math Help Services,  Here is the link for their website:

     https://math-help-services.org/

All you have to do is login and you will see that I have already assigned you a lesson that you can choose to do if you wish to.  If you did not receive the email with your login info, just let me know and I'll help you out!

Remember:  ALL learning during this challenging time is optional.  You will not be penalized if you choose not to do it  and you will not be evaluated if do choose to do it.  I can, however, give you feedback on any work you do.

I hope that everyone is well - keeping healthy, getting outside and doing something that keeps their spirits up every day.

Peace,

Miss Hardy

Today is April 3

Happy Friday, everyone!

The video I created for you the other day took SOOO long to upload, that I decided to take another route for this week's English lesson - good old Word documents!

The "lesson", or proposal for you is listed under Pages & Files, titled "Genius Hour Lead Up 2020".

Read it through and let me know what your thoughts are.

Also, I uploaded the answer key for the Cylinders Worksheet.

I miss you all so much.

Miss Hardy

Today is April 1.

I have posted a video here https://youtu.be/v6ZGJOdgMRU that is my first math lesson for you.

You can also check my YouTube channel Ms. Hardy for new videos as they are posted.

All videos I will be posting are completely optional - you don't need to hand anything in, you will not be evaluated on any work you do, but you can ask for feedback from me!  It is my gift to you during such unstructured and uncertain times - the certainty that there is ALWAYS room for growth in our learning:)

There are two documents (Notes & a series of problems) that you can print out and work on that go with this video lesson.  They are found under Pages & Files and are named "Surface Area of Cylinders Notes" & Cylinders Worksheet".

My plan is to post a video lesson for English by the end of the week - stay tuned!

Remember that you can contact me by email (khardy@nfsb.qc.ca) or request access to our groups' Instagram account (tribecalledhardy), where I send out updates in terms of information related to CVR and your learning.

Peace to all,

Miss Hardy

Today is March 21, , 2020

*Please note that Mme Beaulieu also has a message for you at mebeaulieu22.pbworks.com

Dear students,

As you are already aware, school is closed for the next two weeks.  I already miss all of you - your little routines ("How are you, Miss Hardy?", reliably from Amber) and your hilarious mannerisms (expressive hand gestures by Alex...!).  All of you affect my daily life in such a meaningful way that it's difficult not interacting with you every day.

Teachers in Quebec have been informed by the ministry that we are not to work or prepare or support student learning during these two weeks.  I will abide by these guidelines.  I will also, however, let you know what was planned for you in both subjects during these two weeks, in case there are some of you that would like to 'stay fresh".  This work is NOT mandatory - so you are not at a disadvantage if you do not complete it.  It's simply there if you want to be engaged intellectually.  No extra credit will be given to students who complete the work during the next two weeks.

I WOULD encourage you to keep your brains busy during the next two weeks...growth mindset rules!  Watch a TED talk, go for a walk, teach your dog a new trick! Feed your body and mind!  As long as you stay within the guidelines of maintaining social distancing, the world is yours to discover!  Listen to a podcast!  Read five books!

Help your parents.  If you are the oldest in the family, take care of your little siblings and help out with meals and other chores.  This is a stressful time, so do what you can to alleviate as much of that for your parents as you can.

Sadly, today I received news that we will unfortunately have to cancel our trip to Toronto.  Once we are back at school, I will update you regarding where we stand and what our options are.  I know that I'm very upset, but we need to take precautions, as we don't know what the state of the virus will be a month from now...

In the meantime, observe your world as best you can.  Don't feed fear - stay up to date, but don't be misinformed.

You can contact me by email at khardy@nfsb.qc.ca if need be.

Here is what's coming up in math: Surface area of cylinders & geometric solids.  Browse video tutorials on Khanacademy.org or Youtube.

English - I have included three small assignments - all of which are part of our term 3 plan.  I also highly suggest watching Romeo & Juliet, the movie.  I highly recommend the version with Leonardo DicCaprio & Claire Danes.

1.  Whose Phone is This - Romeo & Juliet

2.  TED talk on relationships

3.  Analyzing Music lyrics - choose a song that has to do with relationships.

All files for these assignments are under Pages & Files, here on this wiki.  The download links are on the last page of Pages & Files.

Keep well, be safe,

Miss Hardy

Cookie Dough orders will be delivered on March 25.

English 23:  1.  20 Questions homework for Act 1, Scene 1 of Romeo & Juliet due Monday

Math 23:   p. 95 of workbook due Monday

Math 24: p. 95 of workbook due Monday

English 24:  1. Unrequited love script & performance due in class on Wednesday, March 18
